WhatsApp is developing users to send photos and videos by default in High-Definition quality. This update will add a new “HD” button at the top while sharing media on iOS and Android. This functionality, prior to sending the media, allows users to select either standard or HD quality by tapping that button. Photos are now sent in high definition at a resolution of 3024 x 4032, far greater than the previous default of 1536 x 2040 for much sharper and clearer images.
It bumps up the resolution to 720p, which is more than the video standard and higher than the regular 480p. That’s considered a pretty respectable HD capability; although not right up on the level most would typically think of with full HD. Videos viewed in this resolution will still boast increased clarity and detail. A feature such as this would, therefore, be very useful to people who might want to share materials that are of higher quality without displaying fairly significant compression losses.
This HD video sharing feature would include a button that, when clicked, gives recipients an option to download the HD version of the video, and another to use standard quality if users are concerned about the amount of data used or if they have slower internet. This would allow the flexibility and control with respect to data consumption and download time to be in the hands of the user.
This includes updating the WhatsApp app, after which HD options for photos and videos will be available to all users for sharing high-quality media. Once rolled out, the feature may take some time to propagate to all users. For those where it doesn’t show immediately, check for updates to the app every once in a while.
This is in line with Meta’s efforts at improving the media-sharing experience on WhatsApp, bringing more control to users over the quality of content shared while ensuring simplicity and efficiency in data management.
