Apple iPhone 16e Launches as Affordable AI-Powered Option with A18 Chip and Apple Intelligence Features

The iPhone 16e, released on February 19, 2025, is a definite shift in course for Apple, offering a more affordable yet still powerful option in the iPhone 16 lineup. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e is Apple’s bid to bring flagship-grade features such as Apple Intelligence and the A18 chip within reach. This device replaces the iPhone SE, putting a nail in the coffin of the Home button as it embraces a modern design with a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, and a USB-C connector.

The iPhone 16e is powered by the A18 chip with a 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine with AI optimizations. It enables full Apple Intelligence support, which includes the suite of AI-powered features such as Genmoji, Writing Tools, Clean Up in Photos, and integration with ChatGPT using Siri. Notably here, the user has free access to ChatGPT and doesn’t need an OpenAI account, and there is privacy protection that handles the data security.

One of the most prominent features of the iPhone 16e is the 48MP Fusion camera with an integrated 2x Telephoto option, allowing the user to capture high-quality images with optical-grade zoom. The front 12MP TrueDepth camera also comes with autofocus, enhancing the experience of selfies and FaceTime calls. 4K video recording with Dolby Vision and Spatial Audio is supported on the phone, along with advanced editing features like Audio Mix for post-recording adjustments.

The iPhone 16e has Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, the C1 chip, for better power efficiency and connectivity. The modem contributes to the device’s impressive battery life, including up to 26 hours of video playback, the longest ever for a 6.1-inch iPhone. The iPhone 16e also supports satellite connectivity, enabling Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, and Messages via satellite when out of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

Design-wise, the iPhone 16e features a Ceramic Shield front cover, IP68 water resistance, and a customizable shortcut Action button. The device comes in black and white finishes, with a minimal, modern look that fits in with the iPhone 16 range. However, it lacks some of the premium features like MagSafe and the Camera Control button on higher-end models.

The iPhone 16e is Apple’s attempt at making top-range tech more affordable. With the melding of Apple Intelligence and high-end hardware in an affordable phone, Apple aims to attract owners of aging iPhones and increase its stake in emerging economies. The pre-orders for the iPhone 16e started on February 21, with availability starting on February 28.
