Google has just introduced a new feature to its Search widget on Android phones in an effort to provide users with a better experience by providing quicker access to frequently used utilities. The feature allows users to customize the widget with a shortcut key that can be set to launch various services such as translation, song search, weather forecast, sports scores, dictionary, financial updates, etc. The personalization is packaged as part of an update to the Google app, which requires version 16.3.34 or higher in order to see these features.
The shortcut feature is turned off by default and must be enabled through the Google app settings. The settings can be accessed by opening the Google app, tapping on their profile icon, and navigating to the “Customize Search Widget” option. There, they can choose one of the shortcuts available and include it in their widget. The selected shortcut will be shown along with the existing icons for Voice Search and Google Lens within the widget.
This is all within Google’s ongoing development of extending its Search widget to be more functional and customized. The widget itself is also resizable and moveable and can be rearranged on the home screen, which allows users the freedom in terms of how they can customize their devices. Adding customizable shortcuts makes the widget itself more functional, but it also gives it a distinct look compared to the locked search bar found on some devices, like Google Pixel phones.
Shortcuts accessible are such items as Translate (camera-based and text-based), Song Search, Weather, Sports, Dictionary, Google Lens assistance with homework, and Finance headlines. Shortcuts provide instant access to specific functions without launching the full Google application or performing a search. To illustrate, opening the Weather shortcut will launch a Google search for weather, and there is instant access to conditions and forecasts.
Though current implementation only facilitates adding one shortcut at a time, there is speculation that in the future, Google will take this feature up more widely. A more global version of the shortcut button being worked on in the form of the Multi Shortcuts button will allow users to access multiple tools from one pop-up window and could make the widget more effective and flexible.
The lack of Material You theming on the shortcut icons is a limitation that might make them look inconsistent with some home screen setups, but for most people this is not a problem. That the feature can be distributed on many Android devices, from the latest flagships to the older phones, means that the advantage of this improvement can benefit many people.
Generally, the inclusion of custom shortcuts in the Google Search widget is a step towards making Android more personalized. It is in line with Google’s overall strategy of streamlining its services to make them accessible and easy to use, adapting to the diverse needs of its enormous user base.
