Ford Finishes Delivery of 140,000 No-Cost Tesla NACS Adapters to EV Owners
Ford stated that it has completed distributing free North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters to its electric vehicle (EV) buyers. These adapters enable Ford EVs to be charged on Tesla Superchargers, now upgraded to include the NACS standard. Disbursing these adapters was only part of a broader plan to expand the availability of charging for Ford EV owners across North America.
The NACS standard, or SAE J3400, is one of the charging systems that are being implemented so quickly across North America. It allows for public and residential charging, with Tesla’s Supercharger network being a integral component. Tesla has also made its Supercharger network available to other manufacturers like Ford so that their vehicles can charge through adapters provided by the manufacturers.
Ford’s complimentary adapters were initially made available to consumers who reserved them within a given time period. Consumers could later purchase the adapters after this period for a fee. The adapters are necessary for Ford EV models like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, as they enable these vehicles to tap into Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. This partnership significantly expands charging options for Ford EV owners by providing them with access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada.
The adapters are created to be compatible with DC Fast Chargers, for example, Tesla Superchargers. They don’t, however, support Level 1 and Level 2 AC chargers, including Tesla Destination Chargers. For these, there are dedicated adapters that one can buy from third-party sources.
Ford emphasizes that it is advisable to employ only authorized adapters to avoid safety risks and damage to the vehicle. Ford warns consumers against the use of third-party adapters with Tesla charging points as they may not be compatible and lead to serious issues.
With the car market continuing its shift towards NACS standard adoption, future EVs will come equipped with NACS charging ports that don’t need adapters. It’s all being done as part of a process to standardize charging stations and make EV driving even more convenient for motorists throughout North America.
The Ford-Tesla partnership is the new charging landscape of electric cars. Tesla’s expansion of its Supercharger network to other manufacturers is contributing to a more unified and cost-effective charging system. The decision is particularly critical to Ford, since it makes its electric vehicles even more desirable to consumers with an immense amount of charging to draw from.
In the future, with more and more carmakers adopting the NACS standard and fitting it to their models, adapters will be a thing of the past. In the meantime, however, these adapters act as a necessary interface between charging systems and enable EV drivers to make use of a vast network of charging points.
