Metallica Brings Immersive Concert Experience to Apple Vision Pro on March 14

Metallica is bringing an immersive concert experience to Apple Vision Pro, their high-energy concert in Mexico City directly to fans. The concert is one of Apple’s latest ventures into immersive entertainment, leveraging the capabilities of its Vision Pro headset to transport viewers into the center of the concert.
The program was recorded live during the sold-out last concert of Metallica’s M72 World Tour in Mexico City with the band playing in front of a crowd of 65,000 fans. The event features full sets of three all-time greatest hits: “Whiplash,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman.” These are fan favorites in Metallica live concerts and are sure to provide a high-energy kick to the audience through their powerful beats and infectious melodies.
To pull this off, Apple designed a custom stage layout with 14 specialized immersive cameras. The cameras were made up of stabilized units, cable-suspended cameras, and remote dolly camera systems that circled the stage. This allowed for 180-degree video capture, providing a totally immersive view for audience members. The concert can be seen from multiple points of view by fans, including the Snake Pit—a mosh pit area for die-hard enthusiasts at the center of the stage—and wide shots of the performance by the band.
The experience is also augmented by Spatial Audio, which complements the high-definition images to create a completely immersive experience. With this technology, fans feel like they are there with the band—front row, backstage, or even on stage with James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo.
For those who are not able to afford the Apple Vision Pro, which costs $3,499, there is still an opportunity to attend the concert. Apple stores will be offering demos of the Vision Pro so that people can book a session and have a look at Metallica’s performance.
Apart from the immersive concert experience, Metallica is also releasing a new EP titled “M72 World Tour: Mexico City” in Spatial Audio on Apple Music. The EP will feature the same music as in the concert and will become available from March 14, the same time that the immersive experience is released on Apple Vision Pro.
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was excited about the project, calling it “game-changing” and offering a new way of engaging with their music. The collaboration is a significant step toward shattering barriers in concert-going, using cutting-edge technology to bring fans closer to the experience than ever before.
This live concert experience is only one part of a greater effort by Apple to showcase the capabilities of its Vision Pro headset. Other live experiences have been showcased by artists like The Weeknd, hoping that this technology has the potential to change the way we view and interact with live music and other events.
