iPhone 17 Air Rumored to Be 5.5mm Thick, Camera Bump Adds to Overall Thickness

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be the thinnest iPhone yet from the company, coming in at approximately 5.5mm thick. That’s significantly thinner than current models, such as the iPhone 16 Pro, which stands at 8.25mm thick. The iPhone 17 Air will also have the same length, width, and display size as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the only difference being in terms of thickness. Both devices are expected to boast an enormous screen, maybe 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, while there are some variations in rumored screen sizes for the Air variant.
The ultra-thin form factor of the iPhone 17 Air means that it would potentially be the thinnest iPhone to date, with an ultra-light profile that doesn’t compromise on major features. This thin profile, however, may come at the cost of a smaller battery and potentially fewer camera features, such as the removal of an ultrawide camera sensor. Despite these limitations, the phone is expected to utilize Apple’s upcoming A19 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM for best-in-class multitasking and AI utilization performance.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max, on the other hand, is reported to be slightly thicker than its predecessor at 8.725mm. The extra thickness could allow for a larger battery, which would be a massive improvement for those seeking improved battery life. The Pro Max is also rumored to feature an enhanced camera system with a large rectangular camera bump with rounded corners and a triangular arrangement for the rear camera lenses.
The launch of the iPhone 17 series, including the Air and Pro Max models, will likely occur in September 2025. The launch will be part of Apple’s tradition of updating its flagship devices yearly, usually with additional features and design improvements. There have also been speculations about the launch of an iPhone 17 Ultra, which might be a new tier from Apple with additional features and functionality.
The shape and specifications of the iPhone 17 Air have generated much hype due to its record slimness. While it may appeal to those looking for a sleek and lightweight smartphone, compromises in battery size and camera features could influence purchasing decisions. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s bulkier form and potential for a larger battery may have takers among those who prefer power and good photography.
In total, the future iPhone 17 lineup guarantees substantial design and feature refreshes on its models to meet various user desires and requirements. If it will be the iPhone 17 Air’s thin physique or the Pro Max’s upgraded functionality that will reign supreme in consumer attention is yet to be determined, but both devices are certain to make a considerable impression in the smartphone landscape.
