Apple is reportedly introducing a new model to its upcoming series of iPhone 17 models, the iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone 17 Air is allegedly set to replace the regular “Plus” model and will be an ultra-thin variant. The thickness of the iPhone 17 Air has been among the numerous rumors about it. Recent leaks suggest that the phone is going to be approximately 5.5mm thick at its thinnest point, with the rear camera bump adding an extra 4mm, bringing it to about 9.5mm thick at its thickest point.
The iPhone 17 Air design is likely to have a single rear camera on the left, with a microphone and LED flash on the right, in an elongated camera bump that is reminiscent of the design on Google Pixel phones. The phone is rumored to feature a 6.6 or 6.7-inch screen size, which would put it in between the standard iPhone 17 (6.3 inches) and the iPhone 17 Pro Max (6.9 inches).
While initial reports had suggested that the iPhone 17 Air would be the same size as the Pro Max version but thinner, most recent rumors have hinted that it will be smaller. The launch of the iPhone 17 lineup, along with the Air version, will likely happen in mid-September, which is the typical time Apple announces new iPhones.
Similarly, Apple is working on its first foldable iPhone, which is rumored to be a book-style form factor. The phone is expected to be 9mm to 9.5mm thick when folded and 4.5mm to 4.8mm thick when unfolded. The foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a dual-camera module at the back and another front-facing camera on the cover and internal displays. It will allegedly feature a titanium and stainless steel alloy hinge and a titanium casing for strength and lightness. The phone is rumored to debut in late 2026 at a price of over $2,000.
The foldable iPhone is envisioned as a premium product with better AI capabilities, such as a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch inner display. It is expected to bypass Face ID for Touch ID integrated into the side button due to the design constraints. Apple will produce a small number of units in the first year, and larger quantities are expected for subsequent models. The company is also developing other foldable devices, including a larger model that is the same size as two iPad Pros placed side by side, but this is unlikely to be released until 2028.
