Google has now released the Android 14 update to the Chromecast with Google TV, a giant leap from Android 12. The update that was initially due in late 2024 is finally out. The update itself is a ginormous 809 MB file and comes loaded with several important features and updates.
One of the best things about this update is the inclusion of support for Google’s new voice remote, which can be purchased as a standalone. This remote has features such as “Find My Remote” and customizable buttons to enhance the experience for those who have purchased the standalone unit. The update also brings the security patch to January 2025 from November 2024 to provide improved security and stability updates.
The Android 14 update is intended to deliver a “snappier, more responsive TV experience,” but certain features like energy modes and picture-in-picture are accessible only for actual TVs. Google has shifted to a two-year cycle for major updates, and therefore Android 15 will be skipped for TVs, and the next major update would be Android 16, which is currently in beta.
Despite the cut-off of Chromecast series production for the Google TV Streamer, Google has committed to continue updating older models. The 2020 model Chromecast with Google TV has seen major updates since its initial release on Android 10, skipping Android 11 and 13. The Android 14 update is the second major Android OS update to the device.
The rollout of Android 14 on Chromecast is phased, hence users do not necessarily get to see the update in real time on their device. Users are able to search for the update by navigating through Settings > System > About > System update on their Chromecast with Google TV.
While the Android 14 update is significant, it is largely about back-end improvements and not so much about core user interface overhauls. The update is really about security patches and bug fixes, which are important for device security and performance. Because the Chromecasts are using outdated hardware, users cannot expect new, big features or a fundamentally new experience.
This update could be the final major OS update for the Chromecast with Google TV, specifically the 4K version, that is set to stop receiving security updates in September 2025. The HD Chromecast, however, will receive updates through September 2027. Google’s focus now, though, is the more capable Google TV Streamer, Google’s high-end streaming device featuring being a Thread hub for homes.
Chromecast users have been beset in recent months with issues, including server problems with older devices. While the rollout of Android 14 is some welcome news with regard to maintaining older Chromecasts supported and secure, the updates do not promise a material shift for those who wish for new features and better performance.
