The Lexus RZ, the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) from the luxury brand, has been completely revamped for 2026 model year. The redesign introduces a host of changes aimed at increasing performance, efficiency, and driving pleasure. Most notable is the introduction of the RZ 550e F SPORT model, the first time Lexus has offered an F SPORT model for the RZ.
The new RZ comes with a totally revised BEV system, a more roomy battery with up to 77 kWh capacity. The upgrade equates to increased driving ranges across the model range, with increases of up to 100 km (62 miles) depending on the model. The RZ 350e is expected to achieve a WLTP range of up to 575 km (357 miles), with the RZ 500e and F SPORT versions achieving ranges of around 500 km (310 miles) and 450 km (280 miles), respectively.
Lexus has also introduced a new eAxle and enhanced the lithium-ion battery for greater power and efficiency. The RZ 550e F SPORT grade boasts a maximum system output of 408 horsepower (300 kW), the highest output in the lineup. This increased power, combined with the optimized DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system, guarantees an even more exhilarating driving experience.
One of the new RZ’s most important advancements is the inclusion of Lexus’ Steer-by-Wire technology. This innovation offers a novel driving experience based on smooth, natural steering, which is particularly beneficial on serpentine roads. It maximizes maneuverability when driving under low speeds and reduces unwanted vibration, contributing to a smoother driving experience.
Another important feature is the Interactive Manual Drive mode, which simulates manual gear shifting with realistic sound. This function maximizes power and torque output to simulate driving a sports car, adding yet another level of driver interaction and satisfaction. The Interactive Manual Drive is Lexus’ effort to create a more lively and responsive drive as part of its strategy to provide a unique driving signature.
The RZ 550e F SPORT trim offers distinct outside characteristics including front lower bumper mouldings, brake ducts, front and rear spoilers, and aero wheels in 20-inch size. Inside the F SPORT trim is the distinctive black and dark grey colour scheme and blue stitching highlights, scuff plates, a fresh steering wheel, and aluminium pedals. All of these contribute to the distinctly sporting feel that harmonises with the enhanced performance capability of the vehicle.
Lexus has also improved charging efficiency by incorporating a new battery pre-conditioning feature. This maximises the battery temperature before charging, which reduces charging time by approximately 30 minutes. The RZ also features a 22 kW AC onboard charger, allowing for faster charging when charged on compatible public charging facilities.
The new Lexus RZ will be coming to Europe later this year, followed by the U.S. market shortly thereafter with similar improvements. The addition of F SPORT trim and these features places the RZ in a more competitive position in the luxury electric SUV segment, attracting a broader customer base seeking performance and functionality.
