Google Wallet has introduced a new feature that allows children to make tap-to-pay transactions on Android devices with parental permission. The update lets children download the Google Wallet app and pay for in-store purchases with NFC technology, provided they are allowed to do so by their parents. The feature is introduced as Google makes efforts to bring digital payment capabilities to children, following the launch of the same capabilities on the Fitbit Ace LTE.
Children can hold various passes in the Google Wallet app, including event tickets, library cards, and gift cards. However, they are not authorized to use the cards for making online purchases. Parents need to explicitly approve adding any payment method so that children cannot add cards on their own.
The feature is connected with Google’s Family Link app, where parents can manage their child’s use of Google Wallet and its tap-to-pay abilities. Parents receive a message via email for all transactions made by their child and view recent transactions. Parents may also remove payment options or remove access to saved passes if necessary.
To add a debit or credit card to a child’s Google Wallet, parents will have to verify in person via their Google Account password. This avoids unauthorized addition of cards. The app will authenticate using a device PIN, password, fingerprint, or facial recognition, providing an additional layer of security.
This release is one of Google’s broader efforts to enhance digital payment experiences for families. The feature is rolling out initially in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, and Poland. It arrives as the company launches the new Pixel 9a, which indicates Google’s emphasis on developing its ecosystem to accommodate diverse user requirements.
Google’s move is a follow-up to competitive initiatives by other firms such as Apple, which has parental controls via its Family Sharing application. It allows parents to control payments made by children on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches. Adding supervised tap-to-pay for kids, Google is attempting to provide a safe and controlled means of introducing digital payments, with parents having more control over their children’s financial dealings.
The integration with Family Link provides a complete set of parental controls including setting screen time limits, approving or blocking apps, managing and securing accounts, location tracking, and receiving notifications. This allows parents to track and control their child’s online life effectively.
Overall, introducing supervised tap-to-pay to kids on Google Wallet is a significant step toward easier digital payments for young users and enhanced security. It is one aspect of a larger trend of including more family-friendly features in digital wallets, emphasizing convenience and parental control.
