Plex, a popular media streaming service, is implementing significant changes to its subscription model, marking the first price increase in over a decade. The updates include a hike in the cost of Plex Pass subscriptions and modifications to remote streaming capabilities.
Monthly Subscription: The monthly Plex Pass will rise from $4.99 to $6.99.
Annual Subscription: The annual fee will increase from $39.99 to $69.99.
Lifetime Subscription: The biggest change is the Lifetime Plex Pass, which will rise more than double from $119.99 to $249.99. The enormous increase is likely meant to lock in a vast amount of cash from users who have been considering a long-term subscription.
These rate changes will take effect on April 29, 2025. Existing subscribers will see their rates rise at their next renewal after that. Those who wish to get a Lifetime Plex Pass at the current price should migrate prior to April 29.
Plex is also altering remote streaming policies. Traditionally, users are able to remotely stream their own personal media collections for free. Under the new configuration, remote play would be restricted to Plex Pass subscribers or those who opt for the new Remote Watch Pass.
Plex Pass: Subscribers will continue to enjoy remote access as part of their paid feature.
Remote Watch Pass: This additional feature allows streaming of one’s own Plex media libraries remotely at $1.99 per month or $19.99 yearly. However, it does not provide other features of Plex Pass like DVR or downloading media.
One major clarification is that other individuals are free to view and stream from such a server remotely if the server owner happens to have a Plex Pass, without needing their own subscription. Shared servers, then, can continue to provide remote access to non-subscribers provided that the server owner maintains a Plex Pass.
In addition to these changes, Plex is dropping the one-time activation charge for its Android and iOS apps. Customers previously paid a fee to activate playback on these systems. The apps will now be fully operational without this additional expense.
Plex’s pricing increase and readjustment of its service is likely only a piece of a greater attempt at elevating its features and raising its user population. The company has been integrating new features and additions, such as support for various devices and platforms. These are attempts at meeting rising prices and continuing the success of Plex Pass and its personal media streaming capabilities.
The updates also suggest a shift towards more high-end content and features, perhaps additional streaming channels or features to follow later on. While the price hikes will upset some users, they are part of Plex’s determination to remain competitive in the media streaming market.
