Google Family Link App Redesigned for Easier Parental Controls on Android

Google has released a significant overhaul of its Family Link app on Android to make it easier and more intuitive for parents to control their children’s devices. The overhaul focused on making it simpler for parents to control screen time by placing key controls at the front and center.

The makeover introduces a new “Screen Time” tab that replaces the earlier “Highlights” tab. This tab consolidates all screen time management features into one place, allowing parents to get a quick glance at their child’s device use. The top card in this tab shows the total time spent on the device for the day and the most used apps. Tapping on this card shows a detailed breakdown of app use, allowing parents to view which apps are consuming the most time.

Under the usage summary, there are separate pages for managing the child’s device, setting time limits, and creating downtime or school time. The device page also includes a speedy “Lock” option so parents can lock out access to the device immediately if needed.

Google has simplified setting time limits by combining app limits and daily limits into a single button. This simplifies being able to control time limits more effortlessly, so the kid is not spending too much time on specific apps or the device as a whole.

The “Controls” page, which remains the core of the app, has been remade in Material You design. Included in the new update are handy links to most critical settings such as Google Account, Google Play, YouTube, Chrome, Search, Photos, and Location Services. The handy links assist parents in keeping track and making setting changes conveniently about their child’s online life.

The “Location” tab is also redesigned using new map pictures so that it can be easier for parents to track the place of their child’s device. This feature is particularly crucial to ensure children’s safety and remain updated about their movements.

For parents with multiple kids, the update introduces a new pill-shaped switcher at the top-left corner. Parents can easily switch between child profiles without having to leave the page, which is handy for handling multiple devices and accounts.

In addition to the redesign, Google has introduced “School Time” for Android tablets and phones. School Time reduces distraction during school time by limiting phone use and silencing notifications. Parents have the option to select which apps are available during school time so that children can have access to learning tools while limiting non-academic use.

In addition, Google is expanding parental control features by allowing parents to limit who can access their child’s device. This feature provides another layer of protection by controlling incoming calls and text messages.

Overall, the Family Link redesign aims to provide parents with a more intuitive and comprehensive set of tools for managing their children’s online behavior, promoting healthier screen time and enhancing safety features.
