Pixel 9a Lacks Satellite SOS Feature Due to Older Modem Technology

Google Pixel 9a, which is a budget phone priced at $499, has been confirmed to lack the Satellite SOS feature. The feature, which is available on other Pixel 9 phones including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, allows users to connect with emergency services via a satellite connection when there is no mobile data or Wi-Fi connectivity. The reason why the Pixel 9a does not have this feature is that it utilizes the now older Exynos Modem 5300, which does not include satellite connectivity like the newer Exynos Modem 5400 in the other Pixel 9 models.

Satellite SOS is a vital safety feature that can be a lifesaver in emergency situations, especially where there is no cell network. It connects users with emergency services through satellites and enables them to send messages along with receiving assistance even in the most isolated locations. This service is currently available in several countries, including the US, Canada, and Europe.

The Pixel 9a, while having much of the same functionality as its more expensive brethren, misses out on satellite SOS due to an older modem. While it shares the same display, chipset, and software as the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, the lack of satellite connectivity puts it at a disadvantage compared to competitors and more expensive models in the line.

Google’s decision to use the Exynos Modem 5300 in the Pixel 9a was likely made to cut expenses, making the phone more affordable for consumers. This compromise, however, may deter prospective buyers who are drawn to the satellite SOS feature for the safety benefits it offers. The Pixel 9a still has additional safety features, such as Emergency SOS, which is available on Pixel devices starting with the Pixel 4a. However, Emergency SOS does not utilize satellite connectivity and relies on cellular or Wi-Fi networks.

For people who spend a lot of time in areas without any stable cellular coverage, the absence of satellite SOS on the Pixel 9a can be a significant issue. As satellite communication technology spreads across the globe, phones that are able to communicate with satellites will become ever more desirable. While the Pixel 9a remains an excellent choice for anyone looking for a budget Pixel experience, its omission of satellite SOS will certainly come into play when making purchasing decisions for those individuals to whom this feature is important.

On the other hand, the remaining Pixel 9 models with the Exynos Modem 5400 not only have Satellite SOS but also satellite messaging services, which allow users to send text messages via satellite when normal networks are unavailable. The feature is convenient for users on networks like Verizon and T-Mobile, which have been developing their satellite communication abilities.

Overall, however, the Pixel 9a offers a great package for the price, even if the absence of satellite SOS is a reminder of the trade-offs that go into creating more affordable versions of flagship phones. As technology develops, it’ll be interesting to see how Google closes this gap in future budget phones.
