Philips Hue Accidentally Leaks Secure Doorbell in App Update

A recent software update to the Philips Hue app has inadvertently uncovered a new smart home device: the Philips Hue Secure doorbell. The leak was accomplished through the app’s new QR code scanner feature, which was included to make adding devices to a smart home configuration easier. When users visit the “Add Device” page and select the “No QR code” option, they can see a listing for a “Hue Secure doorbell” under the doorbells category. This unexpected sighting means Philips Hue is developing a video doorbell, complementing its family of smart security devices.

The leaked data also includes installation instructions that say the doorbell needs to be installed physically, which shows the device is hardwired and not battery operated. The warning message that says the doorbell is not connected to power further validates this inference. The look, as shown in the app, has a classic two-tone appearance with a top-facing camera and a large round button covered by an LED light ring.

The Philips Hue Secure doorbell will probably use both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to connect, similar to other Hue Secure cameras. Setup will involve scanning a QR code from the owner’s card, so video streams will be encrypted. This is consistent with Philips Hue’s existing security cameras, which offer end-to-end encryption for recordings.

While the leak does provide some details about the design and connectivity of the device, other aspects such as camera resolution are still unknown. Given that current Hue Secure cameras do support 1080p resolution, it would be plausible for the doorbell to have the same quality of video. However, details such as pricing and exact release date are yet to be disclosed.

The leak suggests that the development of the Philips Hue Secure doorbell is further along than previously thought, with a probable launch in the fall. This is consistent with previous speculation that Philips Hue would release further smart security devices later in the year. To include a video doorbell in the existing lineup of smart lights and security cameras from the company would add further depth to the smart home security experience for the user.

The leak is a reminder of how difficult it is for companies to keep new products secret, particularly in the technology sector where leaks are frequent. In spite of the surprise reveal, the Philips Hue Secure doorbell is a major addition to the brand’s smart home lineup, possibly filling a void in their security product line. With more information becoming available, consumers can look forward to a device that works in harmony with other Philips Hue devices, further elevating the smart home experience.
