The Nintendo Switch 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the Nintendo Switch, will hit the market in 2025. Nintendo first revealed the Switch 2 with a first-look trailer in January, featuring prominent features such as magnetically attached Joy-Con controllers, a larger display, and a new look. The trailer also revealed a new Mario Kart game that will support up to 24 players on a racetrack, a significant increase from the current 12 players.
While Nintendo has not officially announced any release date, there are rumors that the console will be released as early as May 2025. This is due to the release dates of some of the games that are rumored to be released alongside the Switch 2, such as Doom: The Dark Ages and Lego Mario Kart. However, other rumors suggest a release in late June 2025, with Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero being one of the rumored launch titles.
The Switch 2 will be able to run new exclusive titles as well as existing Nintendo Switch games, but a few of the older titles won’t be completely compatible. Additional details regarding the console, release date, and launch games will be revealed at a Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2, 2025.
Aside from the digital reveal, Nintendo will hold hands-on Switch 2 Experience events in several cities across the world. These events will allow consumers to experience the new console firsthand. Some of the cities they will be visiting include New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Tokyo, and Melbourne, among others.
There are also rumors that the Joy-Con controllers of the Switch 2 would be used as a computer mouse, according to Nintendo patents. Virtual Game Cards are another thing that the company is working on, one designed to make digitally downloaded games more transportable across platforms.
Potential launch titles for the Switch 2 are Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Metroid Prime 4, and Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. There are also rumors for third-party titles like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater on the launch list. But major AAA third-party titles remain unannounced.
Speculation continues on the cost of the Switch 2 with no official word from Nintendo. Nintendo’s focus on bringing improved gaming experiences through novel features and cross-game capabilities makes the Switch 2 appear set to deliver a gigantic boost on the original. Fans are waiting to hear about the specs, price, and release date as the launch draws near.
