Nintendo has formally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2, which arrives on June 5, 2025, for $449.99. The console comes with significant upgrades in the form of a bigger 7.9-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution, HDR support, and an up to 120Hz refresh rate. Docked, it is capable of rendering games at 4K resolution and upscaling to 1440p for enhanced graphics. The new dock features an onboard fan and supports higher performance for supported games.
The Switch 2 boasts better hardware, including a faster CPU and GPU for improved processing speed and graphically advanced play. It boasts 256GB of internal storage, a significant improvement over the first model’s 32GB, and is still playable with most original Switch cartridges. Improved Joy-Con 2 controllers adhere magnetically, have larger buttons and control sticks, and incorporate a new “C” button to allow GameChat access. These controllers are also feasible in the form of mouse-like input or motion controllers with integrated gyroscopes.
One of the big innovations is the GameChat feature, which offers voice chat for 12 players and real-time screen sharing for four friends. This will be charged to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers after a free period until March 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 camera, as an optional add-on, offers video chat and participation in some games. Safety features are integrated to offer secure interactions.
Backwards compatibility is maintained with improved “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” titles featuring improved resolutions and framerates. Launch titles include improved versions of popular titles like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, and Super Mario Party Jamboree. Owners of original versions can purchase upgrades in the form of upgrade packs for these games.
The console also features GameCube game emulation through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, including classics such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. A separate wireless GameCube controller can be bought.
With its new features, upgradable hardware, and strong game library, the Nintendo Switch 2 plans to revolutionize portable gaming while keeping costs low in the competitive market.
