Nintendo’s new console, also referred to as the Switch 2, has drawn much controversy over its name. Even though the majority expect Nintendo to just go with the simple “Switch 2,” rumors and speculation have emerged featuring other names like “Switch Attach” and “Super Nintendo Switch.” Recently, in a YouTube survey leak, the name “Switch Attach” was suggested as a name, which evoked mixed responses from fans on platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). Critics have argued that “Attach” would be misleading, evoking the notion of an add-on device rather than a standalone console, similar to the branding faux pas of the Wii U.
Other proposed names have emerged, including the “Super Nintendo Switch,” a tribute to the iconic SNES with an implication of one generation up. It has been favored among fans who believe that it suits Nintendo’s creative branding legacy. Certain insiders, however, believe that Nintendo would stick to simplicity and call it “Switch 2,” consistent with the original game console’s strong brand identity.
Leaks from production sources are suggesting that large-scale manufacturing of the new console has commenced, with workers reportedly assembling 1,000 consoles on a daily basis. The new hardware, according to reports, comes with enhanced features such as greater battery life, AI support, NVIDIA DLSS support, and possibly a dual-screen construction. Slightly larger dimensions and redesigned Joy-Con controllers in black and white colors are also mentioned in reports.
In spite of the constant rumors, Nintendo has not yet made any official announcement regarding its next-generation console. Industry experts expect an announcement to be made shortly, possibly disclosing the ultimate name, specifications, and release plans. Until that time, enthusiasts are split over whether the company will focus on creativity or pragmatism when naming its eagerly awaited successor to the Switch.
